Why Sell Your Natura Coins with GoldTrust?
Natura coins are a distinctive piece of South African gold. Whether yours have been sitting in a safe, a drawer, or an inherited collection you have only recently opened, the question is the same: can you trust the buyer across the table to assess them honestly and explain the offer before you decide?
That is where GoldTrust starts. We assess every coin in front of you. You see the testing. You see the weighing. You see every factor that shapes the offer, explained before you make any decision. The price we quote is the price that lands in your account, during the visit, via instant EFT. No hidden deductions, no administration fees, no number that changes between the verbal offer and the final figure.
GoldTrust is a licensed second-hand goods dealer, registered high-value goods dealer, accountable institution, and Jewellery Council of South Africa member.
Your appointment takes place in a private, secure office, or we come to you at home if you prefer, subject to availability. The address and directions go out only after the booking is confirmed.
If our offer does not work for you, your coins stay with you. No fee for the assessment, no obligation, no hard feelings. But if it does work for you, the money is in your account before we walk out the door. Natura coins in a safe are potential. Natura coins sold at a fair price are a holiday, a car deposit, or simply breathing room when you need it most.
Natura Coins We Buy
We buy Natura gold coins across all sizes, years, and finishes. Here is exactly what we accept:
-
Natura 1oz Gold Coins. The full-ounce Natura coin contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold, struck in proof or uncirculated finish. All years from 1994 onwards are accepted. Every coin is assessed in front of you.
-
Natura 1/2oz Gold Coins. Half-ounce Natura coins in proof and uncirculated finishes. All years and themed series accepted.
-
Natura 1/4oz Gold Coins. Quarter-ounce Natura coins across all years and designs. Single coins and coins from sets are both accepted.
-
Natura 1/10oz Gold Coins. The smallest denomination in the Natura range. All years accepted, proof and uncirculated. Often found as part of multi-coin sets.
-
Natura Sets. Themed sets, including Big Five series (lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, buffalo), African Elephant series, and other SA Mint Natura themes. Complete sets in original SA Mint boxes are welcome, as are sets missing their packaging.
-
Partial Sets and Individual Coins. If you have three coins from a four-coin series, or a single coin from a year where you no longer have the full set, we assess each piece on its own merits. Partial sets are not penalised arbitrarily.
-
Early Issue Natura Coins (1994 onwards). The Natura series launched in 1994. Early-year issues are welcome alongside later ones. Bring what you have.
An honest note on coin condition: Natura proof coins were struck with polished dies, and condition varies from one collection to the next. A coin with light hairline marks, or a coin stored outside its original capsule, is still welcome. We will tell you honestly what we see before you decide anything. You deserve that clarity.
If you also have Krugerrands or other gold coins to sell, our Krugerrand selling guide and gold buying service follow the same transparent process.
What Makes Your Natura Coins Valuable
Whether these coins came from a family collection, an estate, or a decision you made years ago to invest in something beautiful and tangible, they carry real value. What drives their value is not a mystery.
Every Natura coin starts with its gold. 999.9 fine gold at the exact weight of the denomination you hold, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, or 1/10oz. That is what every Natura coin is built on, regardless of year, theme, or finish.
This is exactly why we assess every coin in front of you. You see the testing. You see the weighing. You hear the reasoning and understand the offer before you make any decision. The price we quote is the price you receive, in your account, via instant EFT, before we leave. No back-room adjustments. No offer that changes between the handshake and the payment.
For those who want a figure before booking: the only honest answer is that we need the actual coins in front of us. Contact us via the enquiry form, WhatsApp, or phone and we will arrange a free, no-obligation appointment.
Factors That Affect Natura Coin Prices in South Africa
Natura coin prices move with the broader gold market. Here are the real macro factors that shape the global gold price. This section is educational; it does not describe how GoldTrust’s specific offer is calculated.
- The international gold spot price. The international gold price, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce on global markets, is the primary driver of what gold is worth globally. It moves continuously through the trading day, shaped by monetary policy, geopolitical events, central bank buying, and investor sentiment.
- The USD/ZAR exchange rate. Because the global gold price is set in dollars, the rand value of any given amount of gold depends on where the rand sits against the dollar. When the rand weakens, the rand-denominated value of gold tends to rise even if the dollar price is unchanged.
- Central bank gold activity. Central banks, particularly in China, India, and emerging markets, have been significant net buyers of gold in recent years. That institutional demand underpins the gold price at a structural level.
- Jewellery and investment demand. Global jewellery demand and retail investment flows into gold bars and coins both shape the underlying market. Coin demand tends to rise during periods of financial uncertainty.
- Mining supply. New gold supply from mining is slow to respond to price changes. Annual production is relatively stable, so demand-side shifts do most of the work in moving the price.
We do not advise when to sell. That is your decision, based on your own circumstances and priorities. If you would also like to understand how the process works before booking, or if you have Krugerrands to sell alongside your Natura coins, our Krugerrand selling guide covers that in detail.
Understanding Natura Coin Purity and the Series
All Natura gold coins are struck in 999.9 fine gold, also described as 24 karat. This is the highest purity standard available for gold coins. There is no alloy, no base metal, no karat variation between different Natura issues: every coin in the series, from 1994 to the most recent strikes, is 999.9 fine gold at its stated denomination weight.
This places Natura coins alongside a small category of investment-grade coins struck to the highest possible gold standard:
| Denomination | Gold weight | Gold purity | Finish options |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1oz | 1 troy ounce (31.107g) | 999.9 fine (24ct) | Proof, uncirculated |
| 1/2oz | 1/2 troy ounce (15.554g) | 999.9 fine (24ct) | Proof, uncirculated |
| 1/4oz | 1/4 troy ounce (7.777g) | 999.9 fine (24ct) | Proof, uncirculated |
| 1/10oz | 1/10 troy ounce (3.111g) | 999.9 fine (24ct) | Proof, uncirculated |
The Natura series: a brief background. The SA Mint launched the Natura series in 1994, showcasing South African wildlife and natural heritage. Design themes rotate by year, with the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and buffalo) featuring prominently across multiple series. Each year, a new theme is selected and coins are struck in proof and uncirculated finishes.
Proof versus uncirculated: what the difference looks like. Proof coins are struck on specially polished blanks using dies that have been individually prepared and polished. The result is the distinctive mirror-field background and frosted, sculpted design that makes proof coins visually striking. Proof Natura coins are individually packaged in sealed capsules and placed in official SA Mint presentation boxes with a certificate of authenticity. Uncirculated coins are struck to a high standard but without the full proof process, and are typically packaged more simply.
How to identify what you have. Proof Natura coins from the SA Mint carry a “PROOF” inscription on the coin face or edge, a unique serial number on the certificate, and are presented in official SA Mint boxes with the Natura branding. Uncirculated coins are often described as “BU” (brilliant uncirculated) in shorthand. If you are unsure whether your coins are proof or uncirculated, bring them in and we will identify them accurately.
Natura coins versus Krugerrands. Krugerrands are struck in 22 karat gold (91.67% purity). Natura coins are struck in 24 karat gold (999.9 fine). Both are welcome, and each is weighed and assessed in front of you. Our Krugerrand selling guide covers Krugerrands specifically.
