Why Sell Your Rolex to GoldTrust?
Rolex is the most traded luxury watch brand in South Africa, and the most counterfeited. That combination is why the buyer matters as much as the watch does. A Rolex valuation is only as good as the reference identification, the movement inspection, and the dial and case authentication that stand behind it. Everything flows from getting those right.
At GoldTrust the inspection happens in front of you in a private appointment office, never at a shop counter. We identify the reference between the lugs, check case back markings, inspect the movement, assess the dial and hands for originality, and verify bracelet and clasp codes. Every step is shown. Every result is explained. The offer is built openly, and if it does not work for you, the watch stays with you and there is no fee for the valuation.
GoldTrust is a licensed second-hand goods dealer, registered high-value goods dealer, accountable institution, and Jewellery Council of South Africa member.
For a Rolex, that legal footing is exactly what you want.
Rolex References We Buy
We buy the full range of modern and vintage Rolex references, in all metals and condition levels:
- Submariner. Steel, two-tone, gold, and white gold. Date and no-date, ceramic and aluminium bezel, all eras. Among the most recognisable and traded sports Rolexes in the world.
- Daytona. Steel, gold, white gold, and platinum. Ceramic and metal bezel, all eras. Strongest secondary-market demand of any Rolex sports model over the past decade.
- GMT-Master and GMT-Master II. Steel, two-tone, gold, and white gold. Pepsi, Batman, Root Beer, Sprite, and other bezel variants. Travel watch with a loyal collector base.
- Day-Date. Yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, and platinum. The classic “President” on its signature bracelet. Precious metal case adds intrinsic value on top of watch market value.
- Datejust. Steel, two-tone, and gold. 26mm, 31mm, 36mm, 41mm. Fluted, smooth, and gem-set bezels. The most widely owned Rolex in South Africa.
- Explorer and Explorer II. Steel sports watches with a dedicated collector following, particularly for vintage references.
- Sea-Dweller and Deepsea. Professional dive watches, steel and two-tone, all generations.
- Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II. Steel, two-tone, gold, and platinum. Regatta chronograph complications on the II.
- Oyster Perpetual. The accessible steel Rolex, including the 2020 coloured dial series that drew significant collector attention.
- Sky-Dweller. Annual calendar with dual timezone, in steel, two-tone, and gold.
We also buy older references including Air-King, Milgauss, Cellini, and vintage Datejusts, Day-Dates, and Submariners. If you are not sure what reference you have, bring it and we will identify it.
What Affects Your Rolex’s Value
Rolex valuation is more nuanced than most people expect. The same model can vary significantly in value depending on factors that are not always obvious at first glance.
- Reference number. A Rolex reference (engraved between the lugs at 12 o’clock when the bracelet is removed) pins down the exact configuration: case size, bezel, dial variant, movement, and production year range. Two Submariners with different references can have very different values.
- Production year. Older examples of the same reference can command premiums or discounts depending on specific details collectors care about (dial fonts, bezel inserts, bracelet codes, lume colour).
- Condition of the case. Original case geometry matters. A sharp, unpolished case supports the strongest offer. Over-polishing removes metal, rounds edges, and reduces value on collector references.
- Dial and hands originality. A correct, original dial and set of hands is essential for vintage pieces and meaningful even on modern references. Service-replacement dials and hands affect value.
- Movement health. The movement should be running within specification. We check amplitude, beat error, and daily rate where possible. A watch that needs service is factored in, not excluded.
- Bracelet and clasp. End links, bracelet stretch, and clasp code all feed the valuation. Original bracelets support the offer; replacements are noted.
- Box, papers, and set completeness. A full set supports the strongest offer, particularly on modern sports references where collectors expect completeness.
- Current market demand. The secondary market for Rolex moves. A reference that was white-hot in 2021 may have cooled; one that was overlooked may now be trending. We price against today’s market.
Box, Papers, and Service History
A “full set” Rolex includes the watch, inner box, outer box, guarantee card (punched or unpunched), bezel or hangtag, booklets, any extra links, and original purchase invoice if available. Full sets support the strongest offer, particularly on Submariner, GMT-Master, Daytona, Sea-Dweller, and other sports references where collectors expect completeness.
A “watch only” Rolex is still perfectly sellable. The offer is lower than the same reference with full set, but the gap is not ruinous. On a Datejust or Oyster Perpetual the adjustment is modest; on a steel Daytona or ceramic Submariner it is more significant.
Service history from a Rolex Service Center (RSC) adds confidence and supports the offer. Independent service history is generally neutral. No service history on a modern Rolex is normal and does not hurt; on a vintage piece it can matter more, though it rarely excludes a watch.
Preparing Your Rolex for Valuation
A few simple steps make for a smoother appointment and, in some cases, a better outcome.
- Do not polish the case. Original case geometry is worth more than a shiny surface. A soft microfibre cloth is fine, nothing more.
- Bring the full set if you have it. Box, outer box, guarantee card, booklets, extra links, service receipts. Put it all in one bag.
- Note anything non-original. A replacement dial, aftermarket bezel, swapped bracelet, or repaired crown all affect value. Tell us upfront: it leads to the fastest, most accurate valuation.
- Bring ID. A valid South African ID or passport. FIC Act requires identity verification on every transaction.
- Book a private appointment. At one of our offices across Gauteng, including Sandton, Pretoria, Centurion, Boksburg, Cresta, and Bedfordview. We also serve Umhlanga, Cape Town, and George . Home visits are available in many areas by arrangement.
The inspection, reference identification, authentication, offer, and payment all happen in one appointment. You decide whether to accept. If the offer works, money is in your account via instant EFT before we leave.
