Why Sell Your Krugerrands with GoldTrust?
A Krugerrand sitting in a safe or a drawer is still gold. It has real value today, and the only question is whether the buyer in front of you will be completely straight about what that value is.
GoldTrust is a licensed second-hand goods dealer, registered high-value goods dealer, accountable institution, and Jewellery Council of South Africa member.
We buy Krugerrands at private appointments across South Africa. Home visits are available in many areas, subject to availability, and the booking sets the time and the address before anything else happens.
Every coin is tested and verified in front of you. You see the testing equipment. You see every reading. The offer is explained before you make any decision, and you are free to walk away from it with no obligation and no fee. If it works for you, the money is in your account via instant EFT before we leave. Not end of day. Not tomorrow. During the visit.
Coins that have been in a safe for years can change something for you right now. A deposit. Breathing room. A trip you have been putting off. The first step is finding out what they are actually worth, with someone who will tell you honestly.
Krugerrands We Buy
We buy all Krugerrands regardless of size, year, or finish. Here is exactly what we accept:
-
1oz Krugerrands. The standard, most widely traded Krugerrand. Contains one full troy ounce of pure gold, guaranteed by the South African Mint. All years from 1967 to present are accepted. Condition affects value to a limited extent: a heavily scratched coin may assess slightly differently to a well-preserved one, but we test and assess every coin individually and explain the reading to you.
-
Half Krugerrands (1/2oz). Introduced in 1980. Contains exactly half a troy ounce of pure gold. All years accepted.
-
Quarter Krugerrands (1/4oz). Introduced in 1980. Contains one quarter of a troy ounce of pure gold. All years accepted.
-
Tenth Krugerrands (1/10oz). The smallest of the four standard sizes, introduced in 1980. Contains one tenth of a troy ounce of pure gold. All years accepted.
-
Proof Krugerrands. Struck to a higher finish standard with a mirror field and frosted design elements. Proof Krugerrands contain the same gold as their bullion equivalents and are assessed on the same basis: the weight and purity of the gold they contain. Available in all four sizes, all years accepted.
A note on gold-plated or souvenir Krugerrands: Some commemorative items are made to look like Krugerrands but contain very little or no gold, gold-plated base metal coins in particular. We test every coin that comes through the door. If something turns out to be plated rather than solid gold, we will tell you clearly and explain why, at no charge. We would rather tell you that upfront than have you leave without understanding what you have. If you are unsure whether your coin is genuine, bring it along and we will test it in front of you.

What Makes Your Krugerrands Valuable
Whether these coins came from an inheritance, a long-term investment, or a safe you have not opened in years, they carry real value. Gold has maintained its worth across generations. The Krugerrand sitting in your drawer is no different.
Two things determine what a Krugerrand is worth: how much gold it contains, and how pure that gold is. A 1oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, guaranteed by the South African Mint and unchanged since 1967. Fractional coins (1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz) are valued in proportion to their gold content. Heavier coins are worth more. That is the straightforward logic, applied consistently.
This is exactly why we verify and test every coin in front of you. You see the testing equipment. You see every weight reading yourself. Nothing happens behind closed doors. Nothing is decided before you are in the room. The offer is broken down and explained before you make any decision, and the price we quote is the price that lands in your account via instant EFT during the visit. No back rooms. No hidden deductions. The number we say is the number you receive.
For those who want a figure before booking: the honest answer is that we need to see the actual coins. Reach us via the enquiry form, WhatsApp, or phone and we will arrange a free, no-obligation appointment so you can see the process for yourself before committing to anything.
Factors That Affect Krugerrand Prices in South Africa
Krugerrand prices are shaped by forces that operate across global markets. Understanding those forces is genuinely useful, not because you should try to time a sale, but because it demystifies the number you are quoted.
-
The international gold spot price. Gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce on global exchanges. That figure is the benchmark that every serious refinery, bullion dealer, and central bank works from. It moves continuously through the trading day as buyers and sellers around the world transact. For Krugerrands, which have a fixed and publicly known gold content, the spot price is the primary driver of value.
-
The USD/ZAR exchange rate. Because the benchmark price is set in dollars, the rand value of any given amount of gold depends on where the rand sits against the dollar. When the rand weakens, the rand price of gold tends to rise even when the dollar price is flat. South African sellers are directly exposed to this currency dynamic in a way that dollar-denominated market participants are not.
-
Investment and safe-haven demand. When financial uncertainty rises globally, investors move into gold as a store of value. ETF inflows, central bank buying, and coin demand all tend to increase during periods of market stress or geopolitical tension, which pushes the gold price higher. Krugerrands, as one of the world’s most widely held bullion coins, benefit directly from these flows.
-
Mining supply. New gold production is relatively steady from year to year, so supply shocks are rare but do occur. South Africa, once the world’s dominant gold producer, now represents a smaller share of global output. Global supply constraints provide a structural underpinning to the gold price over time.
-
Central bank activity. Central banks around the world hold gold as part of their reserves. Periods of significant net buying by central banks increase demand and support the gold price. SA Reserve Bank activity, alongside major central banks in Asia and Europe, contributes to this demand picture.
-
Global coin demand. Krugerrands are among the most widely traded bullion coins in the world, bought and sold in volume across South Africa, Europe, and internationally. That global recognition means they are straightforward to value consistently.
We do not advise when to sell. That is your decision, based on your own circumstances and needs.
Understanding Krugerrand Sizes and Gold Content
The Krugerrand was the world’s first modern gold bullion coin, introduced by the South African Mint in 1967. It was designed specifically to make gold ownership accessible, with a fixed, verifiable gold content guaranteed by the government. That design principle is still the reason Krugerrands are so straightforward to value today.
The four standard sizes
| Size | Gold content | Coin weight (approx.) | Introduced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1oz | 1.000 troy oz pure gold | 33.93g | 1967 |
| 1/2oz | 0.500 troy oz pure gold | 16.97g | 1980 |
| 1/4oz | 0.250 troy oz pure gold | 8.48g | 1980 |
| 1/10oz | 0.100 troy oz pure gold | 3.39g | 1980 |
Why Krugerrands are 22ct, not 24ct
Krugerrands are minted in 22ct gold, also written as 916 fineness, meaning 91.67% pure gold alloyed with copper. The alloying was a deliberate choice: copper makes the coin harder and more resistant to wear, which is why Krugerrands that have been handled for decades still hold their integrity. The copper alloy also gives Krugerrands their distinctive warm, slightly orange-gold colour compared to the bright yellow of a 24ct coin like the Canadian Maple Leaf.
Critically, the gold content is fixed and declared regardless of the alloy. A 1oz Krugerrand always contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. The coin weighs slightly more than one troy ounce because the copper adds mass, but the gold is all there.
Proof versus bullion finish
Bullion Krugerrands have a uniform finish across the coin. Proof Krugerrands are struck using specially prepared dies and polished blanks, producing a coin with a reflective, mirror-like background and frosted design elements (the springbok and the portrait of Paul Kruger). The difference is in the finish, not the gold content. Both contain the same amount of gold for a given size.
How to read the inscriptions on a Krugerrand
The reverse of a 1oz Krugerrand carries the inscription “FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD” (in Afrikaans and English). The fractional coins carry their equivalent: “FYNGOUD 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD,” and so on. This inscription is the mint’s guarantee of gold content, and it is one of the first things we verify at every appointment. Counterfeits do exist, which is why professional testing equipment is part of every GoldTrust assessment. You see all of that in front of you.
If you are not sure what you have
Bring the coins to your appointment and we will identify them for you. Coins that are unfamiliar or that you cannot match to a standard size are tested and assessed individually. You will leave knowing exactly what each coin is, what it contains, and what it is worth. That is the point of the process.
You can book a private appointment at any of our offices, or we can come to you. across Gauteng, including Sandton, Pretoria, Centurion, Boksburg, Cresta, and Bedfordview. We also serve Umhlanga, Cape Town, and George . We test every coin in front of you, explain every result, and you make your decision with full information. If our offer works for you, the money is in your account via instant EFT before we leave. If it does not, your coins go home with you.
